Dancing with my wife last night, we found it more satisfying to do
almost all two-person moves with each other, whether the figure was
called called for partners, neighbors, larks, or ravens, rather than
doing them with ghosts. We're both experienced at dancing with ghosts
in a contra set, but there is more context in a line than alone. As
long as we got ourselves into position for the next figure, it really
made no difference which way we were facing.
One thought that crossed my mind, as I imagine it has crossed other
minds, is that in a large fraction of mixers dancers do not interact
with anyone except their partners until they progress. This makes them
especially well suited for couples dancing at home.
