I’m not sure if this would increase or decrease partner anxiety, but you might 
consider:

At the gender-free English dance in Boston, we find our partners by getting 
(individually) into two lines, and our partner is the person opposite us. (At 
one time that was what all the GF English dances did, but I’ve heard it’s now 
only us.)

Some dances have randomized that even more by having the whole group do stuff 
in a single line (like a Spiral Dance or a Grand March but individuals), then 
forming a circle, then smooshing the circle to form two lines.
