--- Comment #5 from Paul Floor <[email protected]> 2008-12-23 21:36:32 ---
I didn't change anything in your contrib. I did as I was asked to do, I gave
some input and shared what I did and that's all I have done. What happened to
your contrib from there?...I don't know as I haven't even looked at the code.
Horde and Zarafa co-existing on the same server has a couple of drawbacks that
you should consider. Because they will use separate URLs, imap(s) and pop(s)
services and ports:
a-You will need to keep track as to which user is using what services and make
sure their clients are configured for the correct services/ports. Accidentally
telling someone that uses /zarafa to log into /webmail (or vise versa) will
create all kinds of technical support issues. Helping someone set up a new
desktop and giving them zarafa port numbers while all along they have been
using standard ports will cause failed logins and more thech support issues.
This could be a daunting task for a large company and will create extra work
and tech support calls.
b-Just keeping track of who is using what could amount to total confusion,
frustration and overhead, especially for a large company.
c-Zarafa is a bit resource intensive. Running both on the same hardware might
push a mediocre server over the edge.
d-SME's motto is "Keep it Simple". Running two webmail servers and multiple
services and ports doing the same job does not fit into that criteria.
I personally don't see the need for multiple web based clients, services
running and ports open on the same server doing the same thing. I don't see
the point at all. If you like Horde, use it. If you like Zarafa, use it. If
you like something else, use that.
My goal was to change my server to Zarafa WITHOUT having to notify anyone to
re-configure their Outlook/Thunderbird or change their bookmarks (for those
that used /webmail). Did it on Saturday and didn't hear a peep (almost all my
users use Outlook)
On Monday morning I got one call from one of my webmail users in the next
state...
"WOW, what an improvement to the webmail. I love it!!!"
Exactly what I was hoping for, not a single technical issues and a complement.
How often do you get that when you make a major change?
Zarafa has been up and running for me in full production for almost 2 months.
I asked everyone to try zarafa webmail and half my users have (voluntarily)
switched to the web client for it's exchange-like features and dumped Outlook
all together. I myself was an Outlook junkie, couldn't live without it.
Haven't started Outlook in 45 days myself.
Not one person in my company ever used horde unless they absolutely had to
before this. Actions speak louder than words and from an entire company of
user's point of view, there is no need for horde on my server.
My real world experience/opinion is one or the other but not both, no one needs
both horde and zarafa.
That of course is my personal opinion.
Anyhow, I was glad to offer my templates/configurations/etc and am very
satisfied that you were able to use at least one part to your advantage (the
ssl cert configurations). I am very sorry my other code/ideas/parameters led
your contrib astray, that was not my intention at all.
For now I will have to step back and let you continue this quest your way as we
don't really see eye to eye on how this is going to turn out. I am not going
to sit here and argue with you on the merits of horde vs. zarafa, that would be
pointless.
However, if you have any further configuration issues that you can't solve,
please don't hesitate to ask what I did to solve them. Darrell, I will gladly
share what I know and lend you a helping hand to you any time you need one (as
you have always done for me), you just let me know.
Paul
