Sorry,
I didn't see this come through (possibly in the spam bucket..).
I never ended up getting aftp-server up onto contribs.
On the timeout issue, can you run
config show tftpd
ps aux | grep tftp
This should not be a permissions issue, but can you also do a
ls -al /tfptboot/
