I think - but right now it's only a hypothesis - that the described problems
were due to me trying to run affa in the background:
affa --run prodserv &
I did this in order to be able to monitor affa's progress with commands like
"top" and "ps -ax", but it seems that affa must run in the foreground for the
first five minutes or so; if not, it will block as described.
