After quite some further research i've found this to be a VMWare configuration
issue. By default VMWare (at least ESX(i) 3.5 and 4, maybe others) rejects
promiscuous mode packets on the virtual switch.

After setting (in vmware): Configuration > Networking > your vSwitch:
Properties > Ports-tab > vSwitch > Edit > Security-tab > Promiscuous mode:
accept

I now can correctly connect to the rest of the LAN in server-only mode. I think
this bug can be closed. A note of this in the OpenVPN-Bridge wiki page might be
useful.
