Thank you Daniel,

I had issued the following command from a terminal before I read your
post.

yum clean all

Then issued a Recongure from the server-manager web console.

After the reboot, issued the following from a terminal. 

yum --enablerepo=smecontribs install smeserver-BackupPC


This time BackupPC installed cleanly.

Just for my own satisfaction, I will trash this server, re-initialise
the hard drives and start afresh with a clean installation of SME
Server again.

I will install the contribs in the same order and see if the error can
be recreated.

Most probably, I wont.
