Apologies for a wrong bug report.
I had only seen the last lines of the error and not all relevant log
entries. Once I found the entire log, especially the line
"Maybe the problem is a change in the computer hostname"
I had more ideas where to search.
This was a non standard restore process to migrate an existing SME8
installation into a new VM and I had done steps in the wrong order
(installed jabber rpms at a time that the host had a temporary name).
After fixing our procedures, jabber is working again.
This is NOT a but.
