I confirm the same issue with a fresh installation of sme8 32bit up to date.
package installed are there
mailman.i386 3:2.1.9-6.el5_6.1
smeserver-mailman.noarch 0:1.3.0-29.el4.sme
if i remove this package the server can start and finish his reconfigure/reboot
event.
clearly it does'nt operate with SME8 stable.
