Ok JPP the instal is fine, this is the version installed
[root@sme8dev-3 ~]# rpm -qa smeserver-phpwebftp
smeserver-phpwebftp-4.0-6.el5.sme
well i can log to the contribs, upload files, rename files, delete files,
create directories....all is fine except that when i want to download files i
have all the time these errors
"Erreur de téléchargement"
i can find this in /var/log/messages

Not sure that it is a bug.
I have noticed also that i have no more UTF8 errors displayed in the web
browser, did you do something ?
