Ok, I can't find anything obvious and the process appears to have run as
expected.
I'll put it down as a gremlin for the moment.
I did a dummy run with the same input files.
# tar cf /dev/null -T dir.list --exclude-from exclude.list --xattrs
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
tar: /etc/smbpasswd: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: /etc/dovecot/sharemailbox: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: /etc/fail2ban/fail2ban.d/*: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/*: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: /etc/letsencrypt.sh: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
