So you are doing unexpected things and then get unexpected results....

No, the system is working as expected except when you mess about with it, at
which point it is somewhat beyond our control.
It is tricky to template the /etc/ddclient.conf file as that may get updated by
the ddclient rpm at some point, and the the OS doesn't like overwriting system
files. Hence we use a specific one in /etc/ddclient/ddclient.conf
The real issue is ddclient blindly checks for the existence of
/etc/ddclient.conf without testing if there are other config files. You can
raise a bug upstream for that.
