(I brought this up once before on the Cooker list for the
regular Mandrake distro and never got a response, so I'll
try the same thing here..)

I'm curious if it's at all possible to compile JUST the
installation process for i386/i486 processors and have
ONLY the RPMs be architecture-dependant.

The reason? *I* can make my own RPMS from SRPMS. That
part is fairly easy. But I don't have the know-how to
redo the installation process for another architecture.
(I'm sure it can't be that overly complicated, but still,
after reading the rest of this e-mail, you should see my
point.)

This would allow us people who want to run the
MandrakeSecurity distro (and I'd like to see the same for
Cooker/Mandrake) on older/slower boxes without waiting
for you guys (or even requiring you guys) to redo all the
RPMS yourselves.

I have a 486 laptop that has been SCREAMING for Mandrake
for over a year now. Yes, there's a 7.0/i486, but the
pcmcia image doesn't work, so I'm out of luck. I have
enough processor power and disk space to recompile the
needed RPMS on another box and host them, if only I could
get the installation process to run.

It's obvious that the installation program will run on
i386/i486 processors, why not just stick with it and only
change the RPM architecture? Throw away the i586 images!
(Does processor optimization really help the installation
go THAT much faster?)
