I know some people might wander why I have put a webcam on our firewall,
but there are (in our case) a few good reasons:
1)The main entrance to our offices happens to have our fibre connection
to our ISP above it. Since we already have the firewall there, we might
as well use the machine.
2)The firewall had a UPS, for a security application, it is best for the
components to have a UPS
3)Might as well implement a security application on a secure machine

So, since it seems the firewall kernel was compiled with support for v4l
and the ov511 driver (for the Creative Web Cam 3 USB), I compiled motion
( a v4l motion detection program for linux -
http://motion.technolust.cx) for SNF. Now, it ran the first few times
(after I modprobed the ov511 driver), but I am having trouble with it
now - "Failed to open video device: No such device"

So it seems the device isn't being registered by the kernel. I have
tried unloading and reloading the module, rebooting, plugging the webcam
out and in etc.

I previously had this setup working on a Mandrake 7.1 box, and my
Mandrake 8.0 desktop picks the webcam up as soon as I plug it in.

Does anyone know why it isn't working, or what I can do to fix it?

Also, would this be a feature others would appreciate? Motion has
support for logging to a MySQL database for example, can send email or
sms on motion detection, and can create time-lapse type videos if the
detected motion.
