Just to get a 2nd opinion, can you run xdpyinfo from an xterm and see what
it says? I imagine kde is picking it up in a similar manner, and I haven't 
ever seen xdpyinfo or the KDE info panel report something different than
what was actually running, but anything's possible.

You can alter the resolution a number of ways:

1)If XF86Config-4 has multiple resolutions setup,
Ctl-Atl-+ or Ctl-Alt-- (numeric keypad), will cycle through the available
resolutions.

2)Mandrake Control center will have a similar X setup as the install

3)Hand-edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
