Exactly the same error with kppp on my oldworld. Idem with gnome-ppp, 
although this interface ppp0 does exist for me.

So I connect to the internet thanks to a ppp0 interface set up with 
linuxconf's netconf. (netconf is buggy in 8.0, at least for me, and you 
should have patience, try, and retry again to have success, because 
sometimes, choosing an option in netconf -"allow user to connect", for 
instance- may let the connection stop in the middle of the telephone 
number composition).

You can directly connect/disconnect with this interface using the commands 
ifup ppp0 and ifdown ppp0 in a terminal.
And in gnome, you can use modemlight's applet which very cute.
