You are not the only one suggesting (complaining?) about these issues. My ibook used to 'kernel' panic everywhere... So I got tired of that, and went ahead and compile the kernel myself using the Bk tree from www.tuxpcc.com ( check also http://www.ibooklinux.net/ if you have an ibook ). Also, from the folks at http://www.penguinppc.org/ (thanks Stew for the input, didn't know about the existence of such a site.) To keep things short, my ibook never ever crashes now :-) . I'm using 2.4.19-pre4. My visor works! Etc... Now I guess I would have to do the same with XFree 4.0.2 and Gnome :-) I keep getting Xfree to stall on me for looooonnnnggggg periods of time ( i just get desparate and log to my ibook using SSH from another linux --solid-- box and killall X ... ). In the case of Gnome, the 'bonobo-moniker' keeps crashing. Whatever that is. And of course, that brings down other things such as the background applet, etc... But at least Gnome doesn't really crash. Anyway, that's unacceptable. Another thing is that crazy bug that GTK+ has: when saving something from either the net or locally the file manager dialog keeps replacing what one types and reseting it every time one changes to another directory. I guess that I would have to compile Gnome 2.0 as suggested by somebody else, just to get rid of that horrible bug... Or is there another simpler way to do it ( don't even mention KDE I hate that stuff -- in fact, I took all KDE related RPMs from my computer :-) Gnome only Gnome spoken here ; oh, and just in case, these problems have been in the computer since instalation when KDE stuff was there, so me removing the RPMs of KDE didn't break anything up.. ). As soon as I get everything working I will not update my PPC distro as often as I do with my i586 Mandrake installations. Unless there is a major security flaw that must be addressed of course.
