As far as I know, you can't format that partition in OSX. What you do is use the OSX Disk Utility to create the partition as "Free Space" (remember to uncheck the 'install OS9 disk drivers' box), then let Mandrake do the format.
OSX will not see the data on the linux partition, no matter where the format is done from. The linux partition will show up as a volume in Disk Utility, but the type will be 'unknown' and you will not be able to mount it on the desktop. The same is basically true for the other way around: there are ways to see OSX partitions in linux, but you need some supplied utilities and the operation is read-only. If you want to erase the linux partitions from OSX, just use Disk Utility. sharon > I know this is a stupid question but if I would like to format the unix > partitions in OS X, how do I do that?
