I am trying to install 8.2b2 on my old world machine: PowerComputing catalyst motherboard with Powerlogix G3/450
I have so far been unsuccessful getting the stage 1 installer to see my scsi cd-rom.. when I load the appropriate driver, I get a kernel panic. (I have an old LinuxPPC installation using that driver without problem.) So I copied the distribution folder onto another machine on my network and served it over http. The installer grabs files successfully and enters stage 2.. but there is something wrong. I get a grey screen of X-windows, and then I can see text along the left hand side as the stage 2 installer is supposed to show, and a text window at the bottom explaining about choosing languages. However, this is all on the grey background of X. There is no window for choosing a language, and no pointer visible. Apparently the window manager has not started successfully? Perhaps the trouble is with the /platinum display device? I tried switching console but no luck. How can I perhaps specify kernel options to help the window manager start successfully, or else use a less-graphical install for stage2? The install guide shows numerous install options using yaboot, no details for trying these options on old world machine. I -think- that refers to stage1 booting anyway.
