Colin, I just remembered something I had to do to get X working on my G4. I too had become a modeline junkie but never found one that would bring up X and the text based Config tools never found a 'usable configuration'. I used fbset (it is on the CDs somewhere). I did a fbset -x and that gave me the info to build a modeline. I then opened XF86Config-4, commented out the modeline for my chosen monitor and inserted the new modeline in its place. Bingo, X started. Oh, it was ugly, way too high a resolution and sort of shifted to the right, but it was there. From WITHIN X, using the Control Center > Display, I could change resolutions and adjust depths. I set it to 1024x768 and my system happily accepted it, something it would not do from outside of X. I know next to nothing about video so have no idea why this worked or whether it could cause dire consequenses, but it did work for me. The modeline that fbset -x gave me was just a digit or two different from both the ones included and the ones I had harvested from the net but I guess it made a world of difference to my video set-up. BTW, I have a 17" Apple Studio Display (Graphite CRT) connected to a r128 pro via the ADC connector. sharon
