I have an oldworld (7200) PowerMacintosh (true apple, not clone) After repeated install failures, I finally got a install to finish (mostly thanks to hints from Stew and old cooker messages)
Unfortunatley, now regardless of which kernel version (2.2 or 2.4) I use, the machine reboots, and gives me a VFS error that it cant find my root partition, even when I specify it in the /dev/ field or even if I append a root=/dev/sda8 in the kernel arguments. If I use kernel 2.2 I see it scanning the scsi bus and it says it found "0 hosts" If I use kernel 2.4, I dont even see any scsi messages. I attempt to boot Rescue mode, and I get the same message. The HD is a Quantum 1280S At channel 0, id 0, lun 0 the CD is a Matshita CR-8005A at channel 0, id 3, lun 0 The driver I require is the mac53c94.o for the scsi controller. I have found other messages in reference to a debian installation that perhaps the 7200 does not spin the HD up quick enough, and BootX is not giving the OS enough time to boot. My MacOS refuses to recognize my ADSL connection, which is via Ethernet (3com 3cp3647 ADSL modem) as it seems to hate my Telco's DHCP servers, and Linux is my only hope :) I hope someone out there perhaps has had experience with this model, or perhas with this error messages. Any Assistance is greatly appreciated. (Also, found a post on the regarding the 7200/90, in that instead of having a RTC it gets its signal from an onboard ASIC, which may cause problems with faster connections, or large file transfers, has ANYONE successfully installed linux on a 7200? I love MDK, and would like to remain loyal, but if another distribution may help me get past this (say debian or something) I would appreciate the pointer. Philip Callan
