I finally managed to build it also; I took the GPLed xforms from 9.0 and the LyX rpm from 9.0. The dependencies these needed to build I installed from 8.2 CD except chrpath which was not part of 8.2 so I rebuilt it from 9.0.
I commented out gnomemm in the LyX srpm as I can't understand why LyX would need a GNOME library for and I didn't want to build it from 9.0 (it is not part of 8.2 PPC) as it required loads of other GNOME shit to build. It worked very well anyway without it. After that it was a breeze. It is the non-GPLed xforms (binary distributed) from the xforms site that is fux0red on Linux PPC.
