I haven't done an update, only clean installs. 8.2->9.x may be too much of a jump to update cleanly, a lot changed in between. You should also keep in mind that cooker is still being "cooked" and can vary in degrees of brokeness. If you need the machine for real work, I'd do cooker on another partition, as right now it's fairly broken with the glibc update that is going on.
