Things I would probably try: change "ati" to "fbdev" in XF86Config-4 try passing video= arguments to the kernel at boot try the benh-mdk kernel, instead of the stock mandrake one Were you able to do a graphical install? Looking through the old messages it looks like yes? You could, if necessary, fall back to using Xpmac. It would be better though to use XFree4 in fbdev mode if it works.
