This problem seems to be well-known on the list, but I could not find a
satisfying answer in the archive. Please excuse me if I did miss it, but then
I could do with a pointer ;-)

I installed Mandrake 8.2 on a iMac DV 400 (slot loading) and I had to change
my X configuration to use the "fbdev driver" (with the aty128fb kernel
option). Except a maximum depth of 16bpp, everything works well if I boot in
level 3 and then startx as a user, but if I launch kdm, the mouse freezes.

I saw in the archive suggestions to comment out the "load dri" line in
XF86Config, but I've got no such line.

xdm and gdm only partially solve the problem: the first login is OK, but when
I log out, mouse is dead again. It works with gdm when I check the option to
restart X server each time, but I would like very much to understand what is
going on.

Any hint?

Matthieu
