Something's not right there. I and many others have been using the benh
kernel I built and I know I'm using ext3.

Huh? Not the CD, but the tree that it was made from:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] stew]$ ls /mnt/disk/export/BootX/*benh*
/mnt/disk/export/BootX/initrd-2.4.20-benh-9mdk.ext2
/mnt/disk/export/BootX/initrd-2.4.20-benh-9mdk.ext3
/mnt/disk/export/BootX/initrd-2.4.20-benh-9mdk.jfs
/mnt/disk/export/BootX/initrd-2.4.20-benh-9mdk.rfs
/mnt/disk/export/BootX/initrd-2.4.20-benh-9mdk.xfs
/mnt/disk/export/BootX/vmlinuz-2.4.20-benh-9mdk*

Sounds like you're mixing and matching kernels and initrds. They must
come from the same source.
