I am afraid something is still wrong with the post-install script:

# rpm -U ppp-2.3.9-4mdk.i586.rpm
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.10948: line 8: syntax error: unexpected end of file
execution of script failed

# rpm -q ppp
ppp-2.3.9-2mdk
ppp-2.3.9-4mdk

# rpm -q --scripts ppp-2.3.9-4mdk
postinstall script (through /bin/sh):
if ! grep ppp_generic /etc/conf.modules &>/dev/null; then
echo '
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias ppp0 ppp_async
alias ppp ppp_async
        ' >> /etc/conf.modules

# cat /etc/conf.modules
alias eth0 3c509
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias sound sb
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x230 irq=5 dma=0 mpu_io=0x330
