Currently (FINALLY!) uploading a new hackkernel RPM for a somewhat
patched kernel 2.3.18ac7... [the stock version still won't compile with
gcc 2.95.x].
This is the first more recent 2.3.x kernel I trust (that's why we didn't
have any hackkernel RPMs since 2.3.13) - all the major problems introduced
by unifying some device drivers (most notably PCMCIA stuff) are fixed.
There are some notable changes:
* There is no hackkernel-pcmica-cs package anymore, as PCMCIA
is now a part of the standard kernel. Expect some odd stuff to happen
for a while... ;)
* ipchains has been replaced with netfilter, yet another new and improved
firewalling system. Unless you don't mind being on your own with the
userspace tools for now, don't use this kernel if you're doing
firewalling or IP masquerading of some sort.
* Support for ISA PnP cards is now in the kernel. Don't use isapnptools
anymore. Attempts to use isapnptools with kernels supporting PnP can
lead to VERY wierd behavior. (i.e. at bootup time, the kernel assigns
IRQ 5 to the soundcard, then someone runs isapnp to put it on IRQ 7,
...)
If you think you can deal with those, this kernel should be ok... (I'm so
convinced of it that I "upgraded" the kernel on my webserver... We'll see)
