Sorry for being so obtuse.  "contrib/" where?

I built it (esound for alsa native) with no required patches -- after I
built and installed the alsa-lib package that is, which also built
uneventfully.  Esound's configure did the right thing.  What does need
attacking though is gmix.  It is _way_ OSS specific.  I will start
porting that to Alsa tonight or this weekend sometime.  Should not take
very long I would think.  Have to start looking at the alsa docs though.
