Who needs a password? Anyone who gets online.
I have seen many instances of people probing my machine while I am
online, probably at least once every two months. If your machine has
no password and you connect, even through a firewall, I hope you are
running tripwire, satan, cops and every other security program you can
find.
Of course, intruders won't want anything _on_ your machine and once
they discover this gold-mine of a totally open machine, they won't
dare leave any trace of their presence. What they will do, however,
is to leverage your machine for illegal activities, and then it will
be your machine who gets the blame; at the very least, your machine
goes on the globally distributed list of Golden Opportunities.
Of course, if the machine is entirely stand-alone, for example, an
non-networked embedded controller, in an automated, self-sufficient
space probe, 8 miles into the ice crust of Io, no, you have no need
for a password ;)
