Hi, my name is Mircea, I'm from Romania and tried to install the 24 dec
version.
Here is my experience and observations:
Background:
Me: Long time SLackware user and willing to try something SysVish.
Machine: PII-375, 128MB, Riva ZX-128, HD Quantum Eclipse 10 Gb, PS2
mouse, sondcard Creative Labs PCI 64V(es1371).
I d'loaded the 24 dec floppy image and started a ftp install.
The boot procedure was ok, I select ftp when prompted and proceed.
Problems encounterd in stage 1:
1.1) I have 2 net cards in the test machine ( A Tulip 10/100 and a
Realteck 8029 NE2000 PCI). While both was recognized OK the Tulip card
was found first and configured, I think is a good thing to let the user
choose on a multi interface machine what card to use.
1.2) Somehow the cards was configured and network started BEFORE the lo
interface was configured, so on the log console the darned message
"Neighbour table overflow" was spited, it seems to me that is a pretty
harmless one, but still belive that lo interface is good to be
configured first of all.
1.3) When stage 2 file is downloaded a progress bar will be nice, for
the people with a slowish conexion it seems that the system is frozen.
After that the stage 2 showed the glamouros graphical screen, mice was
recognized and I start the initial configurations.
Problems encounterd in stage 2:
2.1) The following message was spited on the log console:
Couldn't open RGB_DB /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb
2.2)And a potentialy dangerous one ( we don't want to be haX0red when
we do a network install :):
Error opening security policy file
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy
2.3) And surprise: NO ROOT USER !!! and glib complain:
Glib-warning: getpwuid_r(): failed due to: No such user 0
2.4) Maybe related, GTK cryed:
GDK-warning: shmget failed at /usr/bin/perl-install/install_steps_gtk.pm
line 772
After selecting language and keyboard the following problems were
spotted ( or spitted :):
3.1) Gtk complaining that glib was compiled without locale support:
Gdk-warning: locale not supported by C library at
/usr/bin/perl-install/install_steps_gtk.pm line 240.
3.2) When user is prompted about selecting Normal, Server, Desktop the
help window from bottom does not change the content to explain these
choices, it retain the previous content.
3.3) I find that you can click on the greened LEDs from left but a Back
button here and there would be a nice thing.
All went well until selecting installing partitions inclusive ( they
were allready defined) but after formating the following message was
spitted:
4.1) A maybe important file missing or an overzelous condition
reported:
Error reading file /mnt/root/auto_inst.cfg.pl at
/usr/bin/perl-install/install_any.pm line 455
After all that went well enough, the package list was about to be
downloaded and dispached but few issues creept out:
5.1) Again a longish download and search without progress bar, or
"please wait", and system seems to be frozen for a while.
5.2 IMPORTANT, a LOT of those messages was spitted on the log console:
unknown entry <category>:<package name>(in compssList)
unknown category <category> (in compssUsers)
There was more than a screen full with those messages and the category
and packages varied ftom text, console to XFree86
5.3) When was the time to refine selection of the packages, the MUST
HAVE one like rpm and sysvinit are painted with UGLY doubled strabismic
letters, can we use just colors plizzz ;).
Then the install of selected packages started ( hey where is the
Caldera tetris for sweeten the screen staring and waiting :) and when
will be finished I'll keep you informed ;)
HTH
