p2-350 128m 6.8G ide 32x cdrom +
creative labs banshee + creative labs accel card +
initio scsi for scanner + idek 17" +sb16 + modem
+ ne2k-pci (for local lan)
lovely install, love the welcome to hackers level and an open login for root
don't quite understand a couple of
points :-
packages selection bit.
1. offset font problem usually with the dark grey entries
in a package list
2. tree structure does not always display properly, i think it's
ready to though, scroll up,down brings it up.
3. it would be more useful if the displayed section of help related
to the item under the mouse cursor (when cursor over the package list)
and not frozen at item last clicked on. you have to click and click
again to update it.
configuration
1: i must be slightly thick, but just how do i get modem config and
network (lan) lights to appear in the traffic lights ?
my normal setup is host zmemw16, with lan via eth0 192.168.0.xxx
( i'm the only user )
: unfortunately, i don't seem to have a manual for rtfm on the subject of
isp dialuip & firewalling. perhaps an oppertunity to select some fairly
sensible default options would be of use.
eg welcome to hackers,.....paranoid
the default seems to be currently - paranoid.
a windows user (don't get upset) would expect to go straight on the net,
and read the homepage (Mandrake).
finally to the blue screen of death, which required a ctl-alt-del, a
shutdown was performed though.
root user - startx kde, reams of kappfinder messages, quite a few seemed
to be application not found
kde eventually starts, about 2-3 mins on either of the p-350's
as stephen user, i just get a blue screen, no console switching, no
keyboard input seems to initiate disk activity except ctl-alt-del
please indicate any info you might need, and also suggest solutions.
modem usage is about the only thing retaining this Mandrake 5.3 box.
as total asides has anyone tried RTL-2.0 with Oxygen, as a further
aside has anyone had networking on lan with Mandrake 6.1(MCP- what's
wrong with it anyway) with RTL-2.0 going???
many thanks
