It is required and does work for various implementations of the 3DI (975
and 985) as I have already confirmed. The fault lies in poor support
implementations on the "generic" cards. It does not appear to be
required for implementation of the CyberBlade (sometimes called 8400)
which is sometimes on cards and sometimes on mobo chipsets
