Don't be too bold: My system lost usenet for the entire period
between midnight GMT and midnight PST --- I am not certain of the
cause, but it appears to be somewhere _between_ the Y2K compliances
of nntp, nntpcache, emacs gnus and bind. NNTPCACHE was recently
patched to accommodate the lack of Y2K compliance in the NNTP RFC
on the chance there would be mailers out there that will use 2-digit
timestamps.

I could only access my email through gnus during that period by
sidestepping my local nntpcache daemon and/or sidestepping my Mandrake
caching DNS. Once the west coast passed midnight, all was back to
normal except so far one email going to the bottom of the list as it
arrived marked 1/1/00 and is being ranked as 1900 timestamps (but all
other emails are just fine so far)

The GMT problem took me by surprise, but when you think about it,
everyone was watching midnight local time when they should also have
been watching for GMT problems. It was also the case that GNUS didn't
show the problem until the first time I restarted it *after* 7pm EST.

To be fair, though, all of our other systems appear to be perfectly
intact, which includes another mandrake (6.0), this 6.1, and two RH 6.0
machines, and to be completely fair, we were also running a test machine
with the 1995-vintage Windows95 completely stock, totally unpatched, and
it also appears to be working fine (knock on wood). The next real test
will be when I try again to build my BLinux machine out of the old
80's vintage PS/1 ;)
