Let's start from scratch, what is /sbin/ifconfig giving and /sbin/route?

What is your network config? Fixed IP with a DNS server apparently?

in that case you could try:

# ifconfig eth0 your.fixed.IP.number netmask there.your.net.mask broadcast
your.favorite.broadcast.number

#route add default gw your.gateway.IP.number dev eth0
#route add your.fixed.IP.number dev eth0

There is a netcfg command that may help you (it needs X) in addition to
netconf.

Hope it could help a bit,
