xcin reads the locale value to decide wheter to use Big5 or BG2312 encoding.
So you must set properly those ariables.

To have the chinese input support you need to install the rpm
packages of locales-zh (if you haven't already), libtabe, and xcin
(you can also install xa+cv which allows use of the xcin input
server with programs not compatible with the XIM input protocol).
Then you need to add in /etc/sysconfig/i18n the following lines;
if you want Big5 support:
LC_ALL=zh_TW.Big5
ENC=big5
XIM=xcin
XMODIFIERS="@im=xcin"
If you don't want to use chinese as default for all users; put those lines
into $HOME/.i18n of a user created to use chinese; or simply define
them on the command line before switching to chinese.
Once the variables are set, you can launch xcin; then all programs
recognizing XIM servers will be able to use it (it is called with shift-space
I think. However, I really don't know how the Big5 input is done. GB2312
uses pinyin with numbers for tones; but the Big5 one I didn't understand
how it works; maybe it is explained (in chinese) in one of the files
on /usr/doc/xcin-*
You can read them with the rxvt in rxvt-CLE; as long as the environment
variables are properly set; you can also use chinese with Gnome/Gtk programs.
KDE won't work; you need a special patched version of QT, and that isn't
included yet on our version (when I discovered that there was not enough
time to patch it and do the tests; and the tests with the patched version
failed miserabily anyway.))
You need the fonts also, of course. Linux-Mandrake has True Type fonts
in the package 'fonts-ttf-big5'. Those are very high quality fonts donated
by the 'Arphic' company.
You can maybe ask on [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list; there
are some poeple from Taiwan that could explain you how to input in Big5
with xcin.
Also, to tell rpm to install the chinese catalogs (the translations of the
program interfaces) you should put in /etc/sysconfig/i18n the following lines:
# the currently used variable; but it is bad as it brokes compilations :-\
LINGUAS=nl:zh
# the variable that will be used on future versions of rpm program
RPM_INSTALL_LANG=nl:zh
You may want to reinstall (with rpm -Uv --force ...rpm) the gnome-libs and
gnome-core packages; after setting those variables; so the chinese interface
and menus are installed too.
