Two ways to get control back:

1.   Ctrl+Alt+Backspace

2.   Ctrl+Alt+F2, then Ctrl+Alt+Delete

Get rid of those .directory files!

Ctrl+Alt+F2, log on, mount the vfat partitions and examine them (ls -al) for
any .directory files in the top level directories and delete them.
