I have used xsane with several versions of Mandrake and RH for over 2
years.
It works very well for me with gimp and vintage ScanMaker E3 with scsi.
The features in the latest versions are quite impressive.!!!
It is by far the best scanning/gimp package I have used in Linux.

This has been with gimp 1.0x and not 1.1x though I hope
to investigate that in the near future.
