I have tried XFree86 4.0-4mdk and I have had a few problems.
I use a laptop with an ATI Rage Mobility Pro.
1) The emulation of 3 mouse buttons no longer works. This is awkward with
only two mouse buttons since there is no universal keyboard method in Linux for
cut and paste between apps.. I am writing this using the XFree86 4.0-4mdk core
and libs and, due to the next problem, the Mach64 3.3.6-15 server and the
problem still occurs.
2) The server XFree86-server 4.0-4mdk only appears to have limited
functionality.
KDE only works in 8bpp mode.
16bpp launches X, but then nothing of KDE appears.
24bpp launches X and then random amounts of KDE will appear over seemingly
random and often long periods of time. When the konsole eventually appears
its font looks like something out of the early 70's !
32bpp is offered but then X claims there are no screens.
3) As already reported animations, such as Mesa morph3d, slow down after about
10 - 15 seconds, but then can be speeded up again as long as you move the mouse
around.
4) I had to install it using -ivh, since -Uvh caused dependancy problems. It
appears that some of the librarys required by Mesa, and something else I can't
remember, are missing from -4mdk, but they are in -3mdk.
I think XFree86 4 looks great, but at the moment is unusable for me. I hope
these sorts of problems are sorted 'cos I can't wait to use it.
