Am presently running Mandrake Cooker 7-02 with RPM packages
dated to March 28th, 2000 all installed, these are from ftp.rpmfind.net
have similar problem with /dev/hdd
/mnt/cdrom is listed in mtab as /dev/hdd
with root logon both the floppy and cdrom automount OK, but if
logon as another user, neither cdrom or floppy will work.
here are images of mstab and fstab and local volume
http://www.one.powersurfr.com/images
Am also having a problem with adduser, error message re:"/etc/skel"
and the program that loads the penguin images of users has disappeared.
Does anyone know the name of that program so I can re-install it?
Also FTP connects into http://www.one.powersurfr.com
but the user is
refused access, even anonymous.
linux-conf may be causing some of these problems, see end of e-Mail.
Thanks for your help,
Gerald F. Howse

This is a packaging issue in mandrake. There are files in
/usr/ilb/linuxconf/redhat/perm. There are text file. I guess two files
are
referencing /home/ftp/pub with incompatible settings. Check them out,
these are simple text file.

I can't tell without looking at mandrake 7.0. Linuxconf is not setting
the
loopback itself. It is calling the init script /etc/rc.d/init.d/network
to
perform this tasks. This scripts is called in two different situation.
At
boot time, it is called with the option "start" and later if a
configuration change is required, it is called with the option "reload".
So the script must be defective. I suggest you
send a bug report to
mandrake.
Note that it is not even linuxconf which decide to call the script again.
Linuxconf ask the script
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network probe
and the script reports if it has to be called again to activate any
change. For sure, the script is calling linuxconf underneath, to find
out.
But the loopback should not be affected.

I there any reason why my floppy drive would *not* be /dev/fd0?
I can't access diskettes in the drive thorugh /mnt/floppy.Lothair says the floppy is at /dev/hdc.
The drive works (computer boots from a boot disk)
If my floppy drive is not at /dev/fd0, how do I figure out which device
it is? And what settings do I have to change to access it?Thanks
