that's quite easy.
The hard part is on finding all man page browsers tools and modifying them.

Ok, the various makewhatis{,.*} have to be changed replacing
TMPFILE=/root/whatis$$
with:
TMPFILE=${TMPFILE:-/root/whatis$$}
