I'd suggest waiting until the next proftpd release, which IMHO is overdue.
Several of us have fixed a LOT of bugs and important missing features
in 1.2pre10, which patches you can find in various messages on
http://bugs.proftpd.net/.
I agree that wuftpd is an old crock, which is why I've migrated to it,
but the public proftpd releases to date have not been carefully coded,
either--just better architected than wuftpd.
