Well ! you could have knocked me down with a feather !

I did indeed try going up to 32bpp, from 24. Now Morph3D, Mesa Gears, etc.,
they all run perfectly !!! 

I dropped out of X, reset to 24bpp in XF86Config and restarted X. It still runs
perfectly.

In fact the only time this problem seems to occur is when X is started from new
startup in 24bpp mode. Drop out of X, change the bpp, restart X, drop out of X,
go back to 24bpp and restart X. Everything works fine and at full speed !

Anyone got any suggestions ?!?!

I suppose it's down to the XFree boys and girls ! (if they think it's
significant enough - I think they should since this problem is still in XF 4.0.)
