It took me about a month to figure out exactly what was wrong with XFree4 on my
system. Eventually I found
that there is a bug in the release version which breaks certain G400 cards (I guess
not many, because other
people have got it to work). Eventually (after a conversation with Matrox technical
support - very helpful
people!) I found that the RPMS on the RedHat rawhide site work OK, but the standard
xfree86.org binaries don't.
This also affects the Mandrake copy of XFree4, which doesn't work on my system.
There are about 8 or so patches applied on the Redhat RPM to the standard XFree4
distro. Could I suggest that
these patches (or the ones deemed relevant) be merged into the Mandrake one? It'll
probably cut down on the
number of technical support calls when 7.1 gets released...
As to why it doesn't work, no idea. The released XFree4 won't even successfully use
the 16colour vga driver on
my system. Suffice to say I've tried *every* combination of kernel & XFree4, even
ripped out one of my processors
so I only had a UP system at one point. I guess it's a combination of dodgy
motherboard (BP6, 'nuff said) and
perhaps a revision difference in the MGA chipset.
