I have a similar problem. I have two machines with the NVidia driver
running. One Athelon TB 850 with a GForce 256 DDR - runs without
problem. The other, an Intel P4 with a G4 ti4200 with a 17" LCD screen.

I usually have a screen saver running and turn off the monitors when not
in use. But the P4 machine with the ti4200 card sometimes locks up - I
get scrambled stuff on the display and the keyboard doesn't respond. I
can only SSH to the machine and kill the X server which is using up lots
of CPU.

This machine was very stable a few kernels ago - but since I did a new
install - the enterprise kernel is running (I have 1281MB memory) - so
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the enterprise kernel vs
normal kernel or not.

Up until recently, I have had very little problems with the NVidia
drivers (4191)
