description:
I did an expert install of Mandrake-Linux 9.0 beta3 after downloading the
iso's, verifying the md5sums, and burning them on 700MB CD-RW's. The
install went well until I reached the X configuration part. There I
selected XFree86 3.3.6 because I have had problems with 4+ with other
distributions. However, in spite of trying my Samsung Monitor (which the
installer had correctly detected) and almost all the generic type of
monitors, and a variety of resolutions and default color depths, I could
get no display. I quit X configurator and finished the install. I then
rebooted. When I got to the login prompt, I logged in as root and ran
xf86config. After running xf86config when I tried 'startx' I received an error
(Something like execvse errorno 2 I'm sorry I didn't write it down exactly and
don't exactly remember it.) I tried xf86config a few more times with different
choices, but always received the same error message.
I decided to re-run the installation, only to choose upgrade instead of
install. I made the same selections the second time through that I did
the first time but chose not to format the partitions. This saved a lot of time
as the install was skipped over. When I got to Xconfiguration, I choose XFree86
4.2.0. Without going into more detail here, I was then able to get a good X
display. I think it is a bug that I had problems with 3.3.6 as I never had any
before.
