[grr...  upside down quoting..  This isn't some dopey TV show, the answers 
shouldn't go b4 the questions!]

Shouldn't that go in /etc/fonts/local.conf, instead?  That's what the 
documentation inside fonts.conf says, and what I did, tho I haven't restarted 
X and KDE in days, so haven't loaded the new stuff, let alone tried the 
modified hint option yet.
