           Product: Installation
         Component: Installation
Summary: automatic installation of hpoj on smp machines crashes
                    the system
           Version: 1.807
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P2
        AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

During installation the installation program automatically installs and
configures hpoj if it detects an hpoj device. Very fine and perfect!

BUT: if that device is connected via _usb_ on a _smp_ machine, the system
crashes during the first boot after installation (and on any subsequent boot) as
soon as pthal-init is finished and cups is started.

This is a known bug of hpoj version 0.9 and is due to printer.c and the smp
kernel. In the hpoj CVS there is a version which uses usblib for printing
instead of printer.c and which works fine with smp machines.

Possible Workarounds:

a) use CVS version of hpoj, which may be impossible at this stage of the beta

b) in case of the combination usb and smp don't install hpoj or don't make
ptal-init start automatically during the boot process. Instead give a message to
the user, that hpoj/usb currently can't be used on a smp machine.
