Thanks for the reply.

It appears to be a kernel problem. Ctrl-F4 shows a repeated set of
errors before the halt:

<6>attempt to access beyond end of device
<6>16:00 rw=0, want=576144, (=0x8ca90) limit=576140

I tried to verify the integrity of the CD-ROM. I wasn't able to verify
against the iso file, but was able to compute md5sum on all files on the
CD without error, and the install programs load normally on another
machine. As far as I can tell the CDROM is good.

This appears to be something specific to the CDRW drive-- it is a
Nortel RW400, 40x12x48 CDRW drive. I swapped it out with another drive
(Cendyne 48x12x48) and the stage2 loads properly and installation starts
OK.

Is there some sort of diagnostic that can check IDE compatibility
problems?

When booting Mandrake 9.1RC2 off CD-ROM, I get:

error in exec of stage2 :-(
trying to execute '/usr/bin/runinstall' from the installation volume,

the following fatal error occurred
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: Not a directory

I am running on a SOYO SY-K7ADA motherboard w Duron processor,
256MB DDR, 80GB IDE, IDE CD-RW. Mandrake 9.0 installation works OK,
but there are some bugs late in the installation.

I was unable to boot with alt0 or alt1 or rescue.

This 9.1RC2 install disk seems to load OK on another computer. I don't know
how to diagnose the problem further.
