OK - I'm not entirely happy with the solution: "Use the OSS driver instead", but
I think this problem is more to do with ALSA than Mandrake. So on that note I'll
close this.

Symptoms:
 On installing and selecting the XMMS-alsa output plugin, XMMS will produce an
'error opening alsa device: No such file or directory' dialog box, then stops
without playback. Sound works correctly if the OSS output plugin is selected.

Configuration:
 Mandrake 9.1 RC 1
 Desktop: Gnome 2.2
 Athlon XP+ 2200
 Soundcard Creative Soundblaster Audigy
